Three key principles guide us towards achieving our purpose of creating a better way to live: Building Responsibly, Thriving Communities and Valuing People. We have aligned our approach to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to achieve a better global future for all by addressing key social and environmental challenges such as health & wellbeing and biodiversity. We have focused on the three SDGs where we believe we can make the strongest contribution towards their achievement, ensuring we play our part in environmental protection and creating value for society.
We care about the quality of the homes we build, are committed to providing safe and considerate working environments and work hard to manage the environmental impacts from our activities.
Our biodiversity strategy, Nature for People, seeks to put the natural environment at the heart of our developments and the lives of the people who live there. We are developing a net gain approach to biodiversity; ensuring nature is enhanced as a result of our activities and people can access and enjoy nature in their daily lives. In 2018 we created 93 hectares of public open space for the enjoyment of all. Find out more about our work to protect the environment, including our partnership with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and our longstanding membership of WWF’s Global Forest and Trade Network.
Our philosophy is to create attractive and desirable places to live that contribute to wellbeing and take into account the needs of the local community. Our innovative design principles ensure our developments enhance the appeal of an area and stand the test of time.
We work closely with communities to base our designs around what is important locally, creating attractive places to live which encourage healthier lifestyles and instil a strong sense of community spirit. In 2018 Redrow committed £184 million to improving local communities, including provision of facilities to support education, health, and transport. We design our developments to have safe and attractive streets, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists, and focus on creating natural spaces where people and nature can thrive, together. Our people are the heart of our business. We invest in attracting and developing talented people and work with education bodies to encourage the next generation of housebuilders.
Spending in our supply chain supports a large number of UK businesses, predominantly in the construction industry. We directly employ more than 2,000 people and have supported a further 13,200 indirect and induced jobs through the supply chain. Our industry-leading work to help address the skills shortage has seen us recognised as a Top 100 Apprenticeship employer for the fifth consecutive year. Our commitments to providing safe working environments and investing in training and development for our workforce make Redrow a great company to work for. We have been rated as a top 3 housebuilder in the UK for sustainability and have won a gold award for the third year in a row in the Next Generation 2018 benchmark. The Benchmark rigorously evaluates the annual progress the homebuilding sector has made in delivering sustainable development, while highlighting best-in-class performance within the industry. This recognition shows our sustainability strategy is delivering real social and environmental value.
We are a Gold Leaf Member of the UK Green Building Council, part of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), a global network of over 70 national Green Building Councils. As a Gold Member we have joined an exclusive group of the industry’s aspiring leaders advocating for transformative change.
We are Corporate Partners in the Considerate Constructors Scheme, a national initiative set up by the construction industry to improve its image. As a partner of the scheme we evidence our commitment to integrating with the communities in which we work and build, and demonstrate that our assessment performance is above industry average.
Our partnership with the Supply Chain Sustainability School allows us to further support our supply chain to embed sustainability into their operations. The School offers a wealth of knowledge and information, which we are able to share with our suppliers.
We have worked closely with the Trust since 2016 to help boost bee numbers. We are the only major home builder to have a partnership with the trust, which leads the way in promoting pollinator friendly landscaping on housing developments . Read more about this partnership here
We have a unique partnership with the Wildlife Trusts, and their valued expertise has supported us to develop an industry-leading Biodiversity Strategy ‘Nature for People’, which aims to connect people with nature where we build. Read more about this partnership here
