Record number of pallets returned, reused and recycled from Redrow sites

27th November 2023

Redrow sites have more than doubled the number of pallets recovered in the financial year ending July 2023 (58,594) compared to the previous year (28,357).

The pallet manufacturing process increases demand for timber and has a significant environmental impact. How we manage and recycle our pallets the risk of them ending up in landfill, reducing their environmental impact.

Due to their size and shape, pallets can take up a disproportionate amount of space in waste skips. Data from Reconomy’s waste management portal has revealed that up to 40% of timber waste skip volume is under-utilised, often due to pallet disposal. This can mean waste disposal costs are higher than they should be.

In 2015, Redrow partnered with Scott Pallets to return reusable pallets back to the original owner in order to improve the reuse and recycling of pallets and therefore reducing their environmental impact.

On Redrow construction sites across the country, pallets are kept in a designated area on site and collected by Scott Pallets. They are checked, repaired if damaged, and sent back to the supplier for reuse.

Cathy Morio, Senior Sales Manager at Scott Pallets said “We have made some significant investments in the past couple of years. We now operate from four locations around the country and have invested heavily in our Transport Department, in both staff and vehicles within our fleet.”

Redrow will continue to work with Scott Pallets and other suppliers to ensure as many pallets as possible are repatriated for reuse. This will help to improve circularity, reduce disposal costs and demand for raw materials.
